Slow Education: Preparing Learners to be 21st Century Global Citizens

School systems tend to reflect the current goals of their society in which there is an obsession with fast education with an emphasis on well-defined learning goals being achieved in the fastest possible way. With fast education there is no time to slow down and experience the world or ask questions that might concern the wider world. However, more and more educators are asking if this the best way to prepare learners for the messy complications of a 21st century highly connected world. In this presentation, Dr Milne argues that there needs to be a greater emphasis in schools given to slow education with an emphasis on experiential learning where there is space and time for creativity, communication, collaboration and a more-than-human mindset to be supported and fostered. In line with slow and fast education, Dr Koong will further explain the practical elements and differences of an international curriculum ( i.e the International Baccalaureate curriculum) versus the local curriculum offered by mainstream Hong Kong schools. She will also debunk some of the myths and truths about both systems, giving parents some practical guidance. To keep our children engaged, arts and crafts, storytelling and mini play session will be scheduled in-between presentations.
